FEMIS: Gender specific drug and alcohol abuse prevention: Nordic-Russian social initiative for vulnerable women at risk

FEMIS is a project that builds upon Nordic-Russian networking and capacity, spread knowledge and identify areas for further cooperation on drug and alcohol abuse prevention, social inclusion and healthy lifestyle promotion among vulnerable women at risk. The project also targeted gender-based discrimination, improvement of social services and wellbeing of these women.

The project brought together organizations from North-West Russia, Sweden, Norway and Finland and focused on three key actions:

Establishing a network for cooperation, capacity building and exchange of experiences between health experts, researchers, social workers, NGOs of North-West Russia and the Nordic countries in the field of drug and alcohol abuse prevention, social inclusion and healthy lifestyle promotion among vulnerable women.
Developing the methodology of prevention work at NGOs and governmental social services for vulnerable women at risk in NW Russia taking into account Nordic experience
Raising awareness and knowledge of the social workers, psychologists, lawyers on approach to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among vulnerable women at risk.

The project organized Study Visits to Finland and Sweden, a networking workshop and a Seminar during the project lifespan 1.9.2018-31.8.2019. The main outcome, a brochure focused on the International and Regional Standards for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Dependence among Women (in Russian) was published in May 2019 and later disseminated among social workers and other professionals helping vulnerable girls and women in Russia.

The project is supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Project partners: Baltic Region Healthy Cities Association (later: City of Turku), Centre for international and informational exchanges in sphere of human rights “Enlightment”, Kvinnekollektivet ARKEN, Independent Women’s Social Center of Pskov and Women’s Organisations Committee on Alcohol and Drug Issues (WOCAD)
